Be an ally
Be an ally, an upstander for others
To be an ally or upstander one needs to have completed the earlier steps, such that you approach this social justice work with an understanding of the issues, and with humility gained from an examination of your own privilege and implicit bias.
Allies and upstanders stand up and take on the problems born of oppression as their own, even if one has not felt the oppression directly. Inequality and injustice affects all of us, and solidarity with a marginalized group helps change the systems that have oppressed others.
Actions:
Use your voice to speak up. This requires a commitment to research, reflect, listen, talk with others about what you believe. Be open to your ideas changing as you learn more. Be a model for others of allyship, compassion and humility.
Resources:
Teaching Tolerance has written a guide, “Speak Up at School,” which offers guidance in speaking up against everyday bigotry.
