Dr. Maria Scott, Ed.D. Sports Communications (United States Sports Academy), M.S.A. Sports Administration (West Chester University), B.S. in Public Relations (University of Florida) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Emerson College with more than a decade of teaching experience and a textbook The PR Campaigns Worktext (Sage) that launches in September 2020. Dr. Scott’s more than 20 years of PR experience in sports and entertainment PR earned her a Gold/Grand Prize, Silver and Bronze Mercery Award in PR while she was at ESPN. Dr. Scott’s experience in PR was as the lead for the ESPN X Games, Winter X Games, ESPY Awards and for the South Florida Super Bowl XLI Host Committee and Tampa Bay Super Bowl XXXV Task Force. Dr. Scott is also a researcher and contractor with: NASCAR, the National Hockey League and the PGA Tour.

This course will cover the most effective ways to get media attention and have your message heard! Starting with the basics of who are the press and the relationship between PR and media. From there, how to create PR messaging such as an event advisory and the purpose of an opinion editorial, letter to the editor. Students understand why securing media coverage for an event/movement is important and how to successfully engage with the media. This course focuses on strategies using the ideas, tactics of traditional and digital public relations and strategic communications with a global scope.
